Open Letter For My People - Sheikh Hasina

Open Letter For My People - Sheikh Hasina

Under the pressure of student protests, on August 5, Awami League Chairperson Sheikh Hasina resigned from the position of Prime Minister and fled the country. Following her ousting, Sheikh Hasina has issued an open letter to the public. In this open letter, which was published from Delhi on August 7, she clearly outlines the reasons for her resignation. The letter has been published by several Indian news outlets.

The letter is as follows:

---

Sh. Hasina

I resigned only to prevent the sight of more funeral processions. They wanted to come to power over your (students') dead bodies, but I did not allow that. I have left power, but I could have remained in power if I had handed over Saint Martin’s Island and the Bay of Bengal to America. I request that you not be used. I have said that those who have brought my golden children back as corpses should be brought to justice.

Perhaps if I had stayed in the country today, more lives would have been lost and more property destroyed. I have removed myself, giving you victory. You were my strength; you did not want me, so I left on my own and resigned.

To my workers, do not lose hope. The Awami League has risen again and again.

You have supported it. Do not be disheartened. I will return soon, Inshallah.

I have been defeated, but the victory belongs to the people of Bangladesh.

For the people for whom my father and our family sacrificed their lives. I have already received news that many leaders and workers have been killed and their homes vandalized and set on fire. Allah will surely help you.

I want to tell my young students once again that I have never called you Razakars. My words have been distorted. I request that you watch the complete video of that day. A certain group has taken advantage of your misfortune. I believe you will understand this one day.

Stay well, my people,

Take care of my Golden Bengal,

Dilli , India
